Colour plays a key role in design, having an impact on behaviour and influencing a psychological response in terms of mood, comfort and emotional state.
Providing the right colours in the right mediums can have significant affects on your home.
Each year Dulux releases a ‘Colour of the Year’ with 2020’s colour a light shade of green. Dulux says that Tranquil Dawn “embodies the nation’s mood on the approach of a new decade”.
“As 2020 is the start of a new decade, it’s a fresh start. A new dawn. In an increasingly hectic and digital world, there is a desire for meaning and kindness. So, inspired by the colours of the morning sky, our colour experts have created an inspiring new shade, Tranquil Dawn.”
Green is often thought of being a colour that can easily be incorporated into any space of the home, being associated with nature and promoting a harmonious atmosphere.
However, the home is a place to create a look and mood that suits you and your family and the spaces available!
Here are a few notes on using various colours in your home;
WHITE
White is an obvious go to for most people. Besides making a space look larger and cleaner, it allows for other elements of the space, such as furniture, artwork and textures, to be the focal point of the room.
It is important to research the many varieties of the colour, you’d be surprised at how many versions of ‘white’ there actually is and it can actually make a big difference, especially if using a lot of a different colour or look (wood, marble etc.) in the space
YELLOW
Yellow is associated with sunshine, happiness and summer, however it can be a hard colour to work with and usually best left as accents to a space. Muted yellow tones can be perfect in bedrooms while a bright vibrant yellow can look great incorporated in small finishes (think lamps, cushions, vases, artwork) especially in children’s spaces and home offices.
BLUE
Blue is a versatile colour with many variations including cobalt, navy, turquoise, pastel with connotations with nature and beach vibes. Blue is often associated with a sense of calm and intelligence as well as being thought to stimulate mental activity.
GREY
Grey is a great neutral colour to work with to allow for other textures and pops of colour to work their way through without clashing. Cool and calm grey shades are great in the bedroom or bathroom and works well when different tones are layered together
BLACK
Black isn’t usually a popular choice of colour for residential applications, especially in a bedroom or smaller space. However, paired with the right complimentary colours and textures, black can make a perfect accent to any space! Think frames (including furniture framing and window frames), lighting, artwork and patterned rugs.
PINK
Pink can cause some divided opinions; however the right shade can be perfect for any space, especially bedrooms or sitting areas. Soft blush pink is a great accompaniment to grey, whites, beige and navy and can be shown through plush side chairs or small sofas, cushions, flowers and throws.
